Alexandra Everett, ufficiale dei marines pluridecorata, viene congedata dall’Esercito per “condotta sconveniente”, più precisamente per aver violato la norma “Dont’ask, Don’t tell”, che vieta ai soldati gay e lesbiche di “manifestare” la propria omosessualità. Quindi è costretta a lasciare l’Iraq e tornare a casa, in una piccola cittadina nel deserto dove rincontra alcune vecchie conoscenze, compresi demoni e fantasmi. In seguito le viene chiesto di occuparsi di Saffron, una giovane che ha avuto qualche problema con la legge e che deve prepararsi ad affrontare un campo di addestramento. Il rapporto tra le due donne, inizialmente conflittuale, col trascorrere del tempo le avvicina, cambiando in modo profondo la vita di entrambe. Poco alla volta il segreto di Alex e con esso il motivo del suo ritorno a casa vengono alla luce.
